1. It is very easy to ‘lose’ an audience online.

2. It is really hard to re-engage an audience as there is a lack of feedback and visual cue in the online setting.

3. Talking to an uninterested and unengaged audience results in no impact nor purpose.


👉 Tip 1: Make it as user-friendly as possible. For example, having more visuals than small texts for your slides helps the audience who log in with a mobile phone screen to have a better experience.

👉 Tip 2: Gain user perspective. Try to use another device to log in to your online talk, see/hear/feel what a user sees/hears/feels.

👉 Tip 3: Understand the audience. This is the hardest part but it is really helpful to understand what excites the audience, what is their prior knowledge of the topic, and background relating to what you are talking about. If you don’t know, you can launch a poll or ask a quick question.

👉 Tip 4: Constantly check in with the audience – Can you hear me well? Do you have questions? What is your opinion? etc.
